How do you make t-shirt designs by dying the fabric?

If you go to a high-end store such as, say, express or banana republic, you will find cotton graphic t-shirts which are not screen printed, but actually dyed. The cotton fabric is actually different colors. What is the method they use to print these tees?

Or they may be piece-dyed after sewing, using tie dye techniques on a large scale:
